Special unit to investigate custodial death of mentally ill man

The Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department Criminal Investigation Unit will conduct an investigation into the case of a man who died while in police custody in Kuala Kangsar, Perak.

Its director Azri Ahmad said in a statement that the 38-year-old man was believed to be suffering from a mental health condition.

He was also believed to have gone on a rampage and attacked his father at a house in Kampung Temong Hilir, Kuala Kangsar at 7pm yesterday.

“Police who arrived at the scene found the suspect in an aggressive condition and he put up a struggle before being arrested by four men including his father.

"The suspect was later arrested and taken to Kuala Kangsar Hospital for treatment. However, the man was unconscious and was pronounced dead by a medical officer," he said in a statement today.

Azri said thus far the case has been classified as sudden death until an autopsy report is obtained. - Mkini
