After Evian 'leak', Kepong MP wants govt to tighten belt for health and wealth

Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng has called on Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's administration to tighten its belt in terms of supplying food and drinks at official meetings.

Lim said this in response to a video of the PM chairing a meeting on cost-of-living woes while inadvertently drawing attention to the luxuries enjoyed by top government officials.

The 26-second clip depicted Ismail Sabri chairing the National Action Council on Cost of Living meeting on Jan 31.

"The members were served food and 500ml bottled water under the Evian brand, which is said to be produced by a French company. The video has received scathing and harsh criticism from many people.

"In this regard, I would like to request that the Prime Minister's Office and the chief secretary to the government inform the people which government departments provide Evian bottled water during a meeting.

"If the Evian water is sponsored by another party, the government needs to clarify the name of the sponsor and its agenda," said Lim in a statement today.

The DAP lawmaker went on to propose that the prime minister instruct all government agencies and government-linked companies (GLCs) to supply locally made goods to those attending meetings and functions.

"I would also like to advise the government led by Ismail Sabri that all government agencies not provide food, coffee and tea other than plain water during official meetings unless the meeting is held at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

"This measure will definitely save people's money as well as reduce food and beverage waste.

"It will also help the government's efforts to reduce the obesity rate of Malaysians, which is quite alarming because Malaysia has been named the most obese nation in Southeast Asia," he added. - Mkini
