Egg shortage caused by CNY demand, long holiday

Egg shortages have been reported in four states recently but a ministry official says supplies will stabilise after the Chinese New Year holidays.

PUTRAJAYA: An egg shortage in several states was caused by a sharp increase in demand for eggs for the 2022 Chinese New Year festival as well as companies taking a long holiday, said the domestic trade ministry’s enforcement director Azman Adam.

He said farms and delivery companies were not operating during the Chinese New Year holiday period, while some even took a longer time off than the two scheduled public holidays.

These factors contributed to the delay in supply of eggs to wholesalers and retailers in Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan, Perlis and Sarawak.

He said the ministry was confident that egg supplies would stabilise once egg farms and delivery companies resume operations.

Azman said Malaysians consume 30 million chicken eggs a day or 930 million eggs a month.

He said that as of yesterday (Feb 3), the availability of eggs was recorded at 91% nationwide and the percentage showed that supply was stable and able to meet current demand. - FMT
