PETALING JAYA: Two men who allegedly masqueraded as cops and extorted a foreign worker for RM100 and later took away his mobile phone at a construction site in Ampang on New Year’s Eve were arrested by police over the weekend.
In a statement, Ampang Jaya district police chief Mohamad Farouk Eshak said the two men aged 35 and 55 had allegedly committed the crime against a 39-year-old foreigner, whose nationality was not disclosed.
The two suspects were arrested in Taman Muda and Pandan Indah, respectively, on Sunday (Jan 30), with the police obtaining a five-day remand, which ends tomorrow.
He said both suspects had a total of 17 past criminal records involving drugs and general crime, with the 35-year-old suspect being on the wanted list over a drug case. Both men tested negative for drug use at the time of their arrest.
The case is being investigated for impersonation of a public servant and robbery under Sections 170 and 392 of the Penal Code.
The impersonation offence carries a two-year jail penalty with a fine, while the robbery carries a maximum 14-year jail sentence and is liable to a fine and whipping. - FMT
