It’s fake, say cops about message on robberies by ‘utility service reps’

 

Police say no such robberies or break-ins took place or were reported to them.

PETALING JAYA: Tapah police have denied a viral message claiming that it issued a warning about robberies or break-ins committed by individuals disguised as representatives of companies dealing with electricity and water supply.

The WhatsApp message claimed that Tapah police had warned the public to be wary of three or four individuals claiming to be from these firms who visited houses on the pretext of changing light bulbs to save costs but ended up committing armed robbery instead.

Tapah police chief Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail said the message first surfaced and went viral in 2019.

“Based on police investigations, the information circulated is not true. No such robberies or break-ins happened or were reported to the police.

“The Tapah police have also never issued a warning about such incidents,” he said in a statement today.

He reminded the public to get authentic information and not to use social media to spread false news that could threaten public safety and order. - FMT
