PETALING JAYA: Threats to penalise or revoke the permits of driving institutes for traffic offences caused by their former students are solely the opinion of the road transport department’s (JPJ) director-general, said transport minister Wee Ka Siong.

Wee said there are no plans by the transport ministry to revoke or suspend the permits of such driving institutes.

“The transport ministry wishes to emphasise that the (statement) is only a personal opinion of the JPJ’s director-general and not a policy by the ministry itself,” he said in a statement.

He said any proposal to change or introduce new policies would be studied by the ministry with the involvement of relevant parties.

Wee said the ministry and the agencies under its purview would continue educational and enforcement programmes to raise public awareness on the importance of road safety and complying with traffic rules.

JPJ director-general Zailani Hashim had recently been quoted as saying the department intended to penalise or revoke the permits of driving institutes whose former students committed traffic offences or caused road accidents.

He was reportedly said driving licences would be embedded with a code to identify the school the holder had attended.- FMT
