Zahid hopes ‘Covid Minister’ won’t restrict polls campaign

Barisan Nasional is stronger than ever after winning the Melaka state elections, said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, taking a jab at the “Covid Minister”, has urged Barisan Nasional (BN) supporters to use social media and other unconventional methods to campaign in the coming Johor state elections.

He said he hoped that the “menteri Covid” would not abuse his power with restrictions on election campaining.

“Newly-registered voters and BN supporters should find other means of campaigning, specifically via social media,” he said at the launch of BN’s election machinery.

Speaking via a Facebook Live broadcast, he said social media would be “the best way to ensure that we adhere to Covid SOPs”.

He added that the party had provided the necessary force to coordinate a non-verbal communication campaign for the state elections.

Zahid did not state who he meant by “menteri Covid”. However, in November, health minister Khairy Jamaluddin had ruled out public gatherings or ceramah for the Melaka state elections.

The Election Commission said no physical campaigning, house visits or walkabouts would be permitted, while the use of social media was encouraged.

On the Johor elections, Zahid said BN would ensure that the best candidates are chosen to win in Johor.

“The young, women and those who have worked tirelessly under BN will be recognised and put forward as candidates,” he said.

He said he would oversee the preparation of the BN manifesto with feasible and achievable promises and said BN was now stronger following its landslide victory in Melaka. - FMT
