PETALING JAYA: Seorang wanita dipercayai tekong darat ditahan kerana menyeludup sembilan pendatang asing tanpa izin (PATI) warga Myanmar semalam.

The Malaysian Family Insurance Scheme: Who is it for and what do they get?

KUALA LUMPUR, March 31 ― Last week, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that Putrajaya was finalising details of the Malaysian Family Insurance Scheme which is aimed at providing social protection to 268,000 families in the B40 community.

(B40 refers to the bottom 40 per cent of the income groups in Malaysia.)

The insurance scheme – which was given an allocation of RM13.4 million to set up – will be run through the eKasih system under the Malaysian Welfare Department.

This is on top of the free insurance protection by Pru-Takaful BSN where the heads of B40 households are given RM30,000 coverage.

According to the eKasih database, there are over 550,000 people who are classified as poor ― and of that number, 262,000 are categorised as hardcore poor, with an average monthly income of only RM1,169.

So the question is, how does this insurance scheme work?

How do I qualify for the scheme?

As mentioned above, the Malaysian Family Insurance Scheme will be channelled through the eKasih system, so you must be registered with the system first.

For those who are unaware, eKasih is a database system that was developed to assist the government to better plan, implement and monitor poverty eradication programmes at the national level, and thus, improve the effectiveness of such programmes.

It was created in 2007 and was developed in-house by the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) under the Prime Minister’s Department, and was designed to prevent duplication of efforts, redundancies, leakages and mismatch in the type of aid given to the recipients ― as prior to this, ministries managed their own poverty aid databases.

How does it work?

How the scheme works is very simple.

Heads of households from poor communities who are registered in the eKasih system only need to pay a premium of RM50 a year, and in exchange, should that said person die or become seriously ill, the family would be covered.

Breaking it down, should the breadwinner of the family die of natural causes or become permanently disabled, RM10,000 would be given to the family.

If said breadwinner were to die in an accident, the compensation would be doubled to RM20,000.

Other programmes?

When announcing the Malaysian Family Insurance Scheme, the prime minister also announced that he was committed to improving the living standards of B40 families in the agrofood agricultural community.

Through the programme, Ismail Sabri said that many types of assistance will be provided to 39,171 recipients from this community, with an allocation of RM109.7 million.

One thousand three hundred padi farmers also benefited from the Large-Scale SMART Padi Field (SMART SBB) programme for the purpose of increasing the productivity of padi cultivation. - malaymail

Gaji minimum: Menteri ingatkan peniaga jangan naik harga barang

- FMT

After 4 days without water, residents cry out for help

Air Selangor says the water supply is channelled in stages and that recovery time can vary according to location and distance. (Bernama pic)

PETALING JAYA: A resident at Taman Jasa Utama, Batu Caves in Gombak has appealed to Air Selangor to restore the neighbourhood’s water supply after suffering for four days without any water.

Henry Muthu, a resident at Taman Jasa Utama for 32 years, questioned Air Selangor’s delay as the neighbourhood’s water supply was supposed to have been restored on Tuesday at 3pm.

“I don’t know what is happening. The whole neighbourhood has no water.

“I have children and elderly parents. We are currently relying on water bottles and it is not cheap to buy so many of them. At the same time, the (99) Speedmart in our neighbourhood has run out of water.

“I managed to get a reply from Air Selangor around 5.30pm today and they said water will be restored by 6pm. It’s now 6.30pm and there’s still no water,” he told FMT.

Henry said the water trucks provided by Air Selangor were not helpful as they only arrived this morning at around 2.30am, three days late.

“Also, the trucks arrived so early in the morning. How many people are awake at that time to collect water. What is the logic in that?” he asked.

Henry hoped that Air Selangor will rectify this issue immediately and asked for more water tankers to alleviate the residents’ troubles for now.

According to a statement by Air Selangor today, it said water supply around the Gombak area has been fully restored after repair work of a leaking valve at Warta Lama, Jalan Kuching around 2am this morning.

Air Selangor said the water supply will be channelled in stages and it is expected that the recovery time will vary according to location and distance.

FMT has reached out to Air Selangor for further comment. - FMT

May 26 verdict for ex-Sabah minister charged with forgery

Peter Anthony was charged with falsifying a letter so that his company could get a system maintenance contract. (Bernama pic)

KUALA LUMPUR: The sessions court here will rule on May 26 whether to acquit or convict former Sabah infrastructure development minister Peter Anthony, who is charged with falsifying a letter from the office of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) deputy vice-chancellor for a system maintenance contract.

Judge Azura Alwi said she needed time to deliberate after hearing oral submissions from defence lawyer S Devanandan and deputy public prosecutor (DPP) Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin.

“I will also be providing my grounds of judgment when delivering the decision,” she said.

Earlier, Devanandan, assisted by D Senthilanathan, submitted that Peter was entitled to an acquittal as the defence had created doubt in the prosecution’s case.

“There are material gaps in the prosecution’s case and the burden of proving the case is always with them,” he said.

Devanandan said the charge against Peter was an exercise in futility as there was doubt whether the accused committed forgery.

He said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) conducted a slipshod investigation as they did not ask relevant questions.

The defence is contending that the forgery charge could stick only if Peter had signed on the document in question.

However, the prosecution contends that Peter, who was the managing director of Asli Jati Engineering, had obtained a supporting letter to be forwarded to the Prime Minister’s Department in Putrajaya to secure the project.

However, the accused is said to have added a title to the letter before it was handed over to Azlin Alias, then principal private secretary to prime minister Najib Razak on June 13, 2014.

“The real hero is UMS board of directors chairman Zaki Azmi, who managed to stop the project from being awarded to Asli Jati,” Wan Shaharuddin said.

Wan Shaharuddin, who was assisted by Haresh Prakash Somiah and Francine Cheryl Rajendram, said Peter had committed a deception because he wanted the project for his company though it was to be carried out by way of open tender.

He said the defence’s case was based on mere speculation and imaginary doubt and an afterthought.

Wan Shahruddin said the court must weigh all evidence by the prosecution and not disregard them when testing against the defence version.

Peter was charged with falsifying a letter by inserting a false statement with the intention to cheat. The offence was allegedly committed at Azlin’s office in Putrajaya between June 13 and Aug 21, 2014.

The charge was framed under Section 468 of the Penal Code for forging a document for the purpose of cheating, which provides for a jail term of up to seven years and a fine upon conviction.

He also faced an alternative charge of using a false document as genuine, which he had reason to believe was false, at the same place and time.

The charge was made under Section 471 of the Penal Code and is punishable under Section 465 of the same law for forgery, and can result in imprisonment for up to two years or a fine or both, if found guilty. - FMT

Don’t play victim, Warisan veep tells DAP

Junz Wong says Loke Siew Fook is wrong to blame Warisan for the souring of ties between Warisan and DAP.

KOTA KINABALU: A Warisan leader has hit back at DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook’s claim that the sour relations between the parties were due to the “confrontational approach” by some leaders from the Sabah party.

Warisan vice-president Junz Wong denied this and instead pointed out that the rocky patch started after DAP’s “betrayal” when Pakatan Harapan agreed to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s government.

“DAP’s version of events is misleading. They are trying to hide certain facts and portray themselves as victims,” he said in a statement here today.

“The fact is, ties between the opposition parties have been tense since 2021 when PH decided to have the MoU with Putrajaya.”

At an online forum last night, Loke highlighted the recent Johor elections, where Warisan decided to contest in seats that DAP had won in the last general election (GE14).

He also spoke of the “confrontational approach” towards DAP by some Warisan leaders.

“I don’t know their agenda, but it seems like they want to ‘langgar’ (go against) us,” Loke had said, without mentioning any names.

Wong said PH had described Ismail as a traitor in 2020 and labelled the current administration a “backdoor government”, yet it still agreed to the MoU the following year.

He claimed that after the MoU was inked, PH was given access to approximately RM166.7 million in direct grants and RM178 million in project funds.

“Why did PH keep quiet about the hundreds of millions?” he asked, adding that an “MoU 2.0” was also proposed, engineered and pushed by DAP in Parliament recently.

“Who can guarantee that there won’t be an MoU 3.0 or 4.0 after the general election?

“MoU after MoU, but did the people vote for PH so that it can take these numbers to support Umno?”

Wong, who was with DAP from 2013 to 2016 before joining Warisan, added that a state-level MoU which PH tried to sign with the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah government was also the brainchild of DAP.

“DAP’s Lim Guan Eng flew down to Sabah to personally meet Bersatu chief Hajiji Noor in secret until it was exposed.”

“Is this not DAP betraying Sabahans?” he asked. “Don’t play victim. Sabahans and Malaysians are not fools to continue being hoodwinked by DAP.” - FMT

KLIA, klia2 make ‘final approach’ to receive visitors

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd said the number of flight arrivals and departures at KLIA would be officially announced tomorrow. (Bernama pic)

SEPANG: The country’s main gateway, the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), is ready to receive arrivals and handle more air traffic when the country’s border reopens tomorrow.

A check by Bernama at the main terminals of KLIA and klia2 today found that staff at the airports were making thorough preparations on enforcement, compliance with SOPs, and security control, among others.

Business premises such as restaurants, fast food outlets, convenience stores, as well as souvenir and chocolate shops all appeared to be operating at full capacity.

SOP compliance reminders and warnings on illegal taxis were also heard through the public address system on a regular basis.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) corporate communications division general manager Nik Anis Nik Zakaria said the number of flight arrivals and departures at KLIA would be officially announced tomorrow.

“Currently, we are scheduling and obtaining information from all airlines,” she said.

AirAsia, one of the major airlines operating from klia2, said it would be handling 12 international flights tomorrow, from Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Bangladesh, the Philippines and India.

The first AirAsia international flight to land tomorrow will be AK52 from Bengaluru, India, at about 6.20am.

On March 8, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that the country’s borders would reopen from April 1 in line with the country’s plan to begin its transition to the endemic phase of Covid-19.

Fidani Factory assistant supervisor Azwana Mohamad said the shop selling chocolates at klia2 had increased the number of employees to accommodate the expected increase in visitors.

“The store was first closed on March 18, 2020, and we only resumed operations in early 2021. Sales dropped and we had to sell chocolates online to cover costs.

“From tomorrow, it is hoped that sales will increase to the levels before the Covid-19 pandemic,” she said.

The Doctor2u kiosk, located at the klia2 departure hall, offers Covid-19 screening services, including RT-PCR and RTK-Ag tests.

Doctor2u employee Boris Wong said that currently, his department received an average of between 20 and 30 travellers and the number was expected to increase starting tomorrow.

“We will monitor the arrival of travellers who want Covid-19 screening tests at the kiosk for two days starting tomorrow and will increase staff capacity as needed,” he said.

Abdul Razak, a limousine driver at KLIA, advised travellers to use a legitimate travel service by going to the transport service providers’ counters at the arrival hall.

“This is to avoid being duped by illegal taxi services who are expected to take advantage when many tourists arrive,” said the limousine driver of 20 years. - FMT

Teachers ill-equipped to conduct co-curricular activities, says NUTP

Teachers should focus on academic subjects, while co-curricular activities are outsourced to people who are qualified, says official from teachers’ union.

KUALA LUMPUR: Teachers do not have the proper and adequate training required to conduct co-curricular activities and should focus on academic subjects, says an education expert.

National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) vice-president Wak Jemah @ Mimah Kampok said teachers were not equipped to juggle both academic subjects and co-curricular activities.

“We do not have the right training to run co-curricular activities and clubs.

“It has always been a challenge for us (to do both) and this issue has been brought up by teachers many times,” she said in a panel discussion at the 2022 National Education and Learning Summit today.

She added there were many aspects of documentation and reporting required to properly conduct these activities and it took up too much time.

“You have to plan the programme and then analyse students’ performance. If a student doesn’t do well in the activity, you have to plan ways for them to improve.”

She said it would be better if the teaching of these activities was outsourced to qualified people who were trained to help students excel in these areas.

In addition to the lack of adequate training for teachers, Wak also said their ability to deliver quality co-curricular education was hindered by constant rotations.

“Every year, teachers will be rotated to manage different co-curricular activities. So, a single teacher ends up wearing many hats.

“Teachers should focus on academic subjects, while co-curricular activities can be handled by someone who is qualified”. - FMT

Maid wanted to leave country because of ‘a bad person’, High Court told

IPOH: The maid in the rape case involving Tronoh assemblyman Paul Yong had told her mother and her uncle that she wanted to return to Indonesia because there was “a bad person”, the High Court heard today.

Speaking through an interpreter, Muhammad Rusdi, 51, of Sumbawa, Indonesia, said the matter was related to him and the victim’s mother at the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 19, 2019.

“During the meeting, she wept and hugged her mother. She said she wanted to return home as there was a bad person,” he said when questioned by deputy public prosecutor Fitri Sadarudin.

Asked by Fitri whether the “bad person” referred to her employer, Muhammad disagreed.

Muhammad said in the only meeting among the three of them, the victim wanted to reveal “a secret” but was then ordered out of the embassy hostel.

The witness did not agree with Fitri’s suggestion that the secret referred to the woman’s intention to say that she had been raped by her employer.

When questioned by lead defence counsel Rajpal Singh on whether the victim named the bad person, Muhammad replied: “Not mentioned. I do not know the person.”

Rajpal then informed High Court judge Abdul Wahab Mohamed that the defence had closed its case after its last witness completed giving his statement.

The judge later ordered both parties to submit their written arguments before or on April 25 and file their rebuttals on May 9. He also set May 17 for oral arguments.

Yong, 52, is accused of raping the 23-year-old maid in a room on the first floor of his house in Meru Desa Park between 8.15pm and 9.15pm on July 7, 2019.

He was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping upon conviction.

On March 16, the defence team called Yong and his wife, Too Choon Looi, 46, as witnesses.

The High Court earlier ordered Yong to enter his defence after ruling that the prosecution had succeeded in proving a prima facie case against him. - FMT

PBDS Condemns Proposal By PAS For Only Muslims To Be Prime Minister

 Andrew Bugie

Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) Baru is alarmed that PAS is seeking a constitutional amendment to make it a prerequisite for the prime minister to be a Muslim, said its information chief Andrew Bugie.

(The Brorneo Post) – In a statement yesterday, Andrew said PBDS joins the chorus of criticisms against the proposal made by PAS senator and information chief Khairil Nizam Khirudin, as this would deny the rights of non-Muslim Malaysians.

He pointed out that in any country practising the principles of democracy, the concept of ‘commanding the support of the majority’ is the basis in appointing the president or a prime minister.

“In making such a call, not only is Khairil ignorant of the multiracial make-up of the country but he and his party is exhibiting intolerance for non-Muslim Malaysians,” said Andrew in the statement.

He added PBDS also views the proposal by the PAS senator as against the spirit of the formation of Malaysia and the freedom of religion, which was one of the guarantees given to Sarawakians by Malaysia’s founding prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj.

“PBDS wishes to remind Khairil Nizam that the sanctity of Islam is protected by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. PBDS is questioning that in making such a proposal, is Khairil suggesting that the Agong and other Islamic bodies are not sufficient in protecting the sanctity of Islam?

“PBDS wishes to remind Khairil and PAS that there is no provision in the Federal Constitution that says race and religion is a qualification to assume the Prime Minister post,” he said.

He pointed out PBDS opined that Malaysia’s parliamentary system would be severely compromised if the proposal was implemented.

“Khairil and PAS are riding on religion to win the votes of the Malay Muslims.

“As it is now, the factors of race, religion and regionalism are divisive enough for this country,” he said.

If PAS and its extremist leaders have no respect at all on the very foundation upon which this country was formed, he said there is no more valid reason for Sabah and Sarawak to remain as part of the Malaysian Federation.

In a Facebook post last week, Khairil said his suggestion was made to protect and preserve the sanctity of Islam as the religion of the federation.

He said the state constitutions of Terengganu, Kedah, Perlis, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang also stipulated that only a Muslim could hold the post of menteri besar.

If Not Ismail Sabri Then Who?

So, until you can produce someone better than Ismail Sabri, fook off and go play in the corner by yourself, because Bentong Kali and Botak Chin do not make a better IGP, never mind how much a clown Hamid Bador may be.

NO HOLDS BARRED

Raja Petra Kamarudin

Umno did not fall in 1990 (when the party split into Team A and Team B).

Umno did not fall in 1995 (and that made Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah wind up Semangat 46 and return to Umno).

Umno did not fall in 1999 when the Reformasi Movement exploded onto the Malaysian scene.

Umno did not fall in 2004 when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad stepped down.

Umno did not fall in 2008 and 2013, even when 95% of the Chinese voted DAP-Pakatan.

But Umno fell in 2018.

More than 30 years of Malaysian political history over seven out of 14 general elections have proven that Umno will only fall when the Malays walk out, and will retain power when the Malays rally behind the government.

They say the last few by-elections and state elections since 2018 have proven that the Malays have returned to Umno.

Have they?

Read ‘PN Eating Into BN’s Malay Vote Bank, Forum Told‘ (READ HERE). The talk that the Malays have returned to Umno is a fallacy.

Umno keeps talking about the half-full glass of water. But then a half-full glass of water is also a half-empty glass of water.

Umno talks about the 29% of the voters who voted for them in the recent Johor state election (or 43% of the voters who voted for Barisan Nasional). That is not even half-a-glass of voter. It’s less than a one-third full glass of water.

I do not want to talk about the small fish that I caught. I want to talk about the big fish that got away.

Okay, maybe 30% of the people support me. And maybe only 30% of the people support the opposition. But that means 40% of the people are uncommitted to either side.

And that is very worrying because that means 40% of the people can swing either way and both ways.

The only issue is: what will trigger the 40% to swing either this way or that way?

The people are fed up with Pakatan Harapan. The people are fed up with Barisan Nasional. And the people are waiting for a third alternative, but it has not come yet.

The first to come along and show the people they are the third alternative, they are going to get the support of the 40% disgusted people who hate what both Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional are doing.

So, who do you want for PM10, Nur Sajat?

Some people want Anwar Ibrahim as PM10. Some people want Tok Mat as PM10. Some people want Najib Razak as PM10. Some people want Zahid Hamidi as PM10. Some people want Khairy Jamaluddin as PM10. Some people want Hishammuddin Hussein as PM10. Some people want Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman as PM10. Some people want Rafizi Ramli as PM10. For all you know, some people may even feel Nur Sajat is better as PM10 than all the above.

I am sure if you propose Bentong Kali or Botak Chin as the new IGP to replace Hamid Bador, most Malaysians will say Hamid Bador may be a court jester, but a court jester is still far better than Bentong Kali and Botak Chin.

Malaysia is suffering from a leadership deficiency syndrome or LDS.

Given another year or so, Ismail Sabri Yaakob may yet prove he is that ‘missing candidate’ for PM10 that Malaysians are crying out for. And that is why Zahid Hamidi is pushing for GE15 now.

Firstly, before the end of the year, Zahid is going to jail. There are no two ways about it. Secondly, they cannot give Ismail Sabri too much time to prove he is suitable and capable of becoming PM10. And all Ismail Sabri needs is time. Hence they want GE15 to be held now.

Okay, some say Ismail Sabri is not the best candidate for PM10. So, who is, then? Ismail Sabri may have only one eye, as they say, but he is better than all the others who are totally blind. And in the land of the blind, the one-eye is king.

So, until you can produce someone better than Ismail Sabri, fook off and go play in the corner by yourself, because Bentong Kali and Botak Chin do not make a better IGP, never mind how much a clown Hamid Bador may be.
