Bill to limit PM’s term to 10 years to be tabled this month

Law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar says several engagement sessions have been held with MPs, senators and civil society members on the proposed bill to limit the prime minister’s tenure.

KUALA LUMPUR: Law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar says the proposed constitutional amendment to limit the prime minister’s tenure to 10 years will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat this month.

In a written reply to Madius Tangau (PH-Tuaran), he said several engagement sessions had been held with MPs, senators and civil society members on the proposed bill.

The proposed 10-year limit is one of the items in the memorandum of understanding (MoU) inked between Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Pakatan Harapan.

Wan Junaidi also said the government would table a bill to bring back the Parliamentary Services Act as well as amendments to the Houses of Parliament (Privileges and Powers) Act during the next meeting of Parliament beginning on July 18.

Replying to another question from Azis Jamman (Warisan-Sepanggar) on whether the government would ban voters from bringing their mobile phones into voting centres, Wan Junaidi said there was no plan to do so.

“Bringing mobile phones into the voting centres is not an offence under the Election Offences Act,” he said. - FMT
