Six houses washed away, Kampung Tersang residents want urgent help

It was a double blow for six homeowners in Kampung Tersang, Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas, who were not only hit by the floods but also lost their homes.

Che Hasniza Che Omar, 45, said she was heartbroken when she discovered that the heritage house she had been occupying for over 27 years was destroyed by swift floodwaters last Sunday when she was at the Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tok Deh Temporary Relief Centre (PPS).

“My family and I moved to the PPS on Saturday evening after water started flooding our area.

“Yesterday, I went home to see the condition of the house hoping my house would not be washed away but felt very sad because the heritage house I had been living in for over 27 years was washed away, 200m from the original site,” she said when met by reporters in Kampung Tersang yesterday.

The mother of six said she and her family were at a wit’s end to find a new shelter because their monthly income was not enough to build a new house.

“We can't afford to build a new house because I don't work while my husband Mat Rodi Zakaria, 55, works as a rubber tapper,” she said.

Construction project

Another resident who also suffered the same fate, Mohd Huraini Mohd, 40, hoped that the government or any agency would come forward to help build houses for those who lost their homes.

“This is the worst flood thus far that has washed away my house. In fact, most residents claim that one of the causes is believed to be due to the construction of a flood mitigation project in Kampung Lanchang Phase 1 which caused water to not flow properly,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kelantan National Security Council (NSC) director Jefny Muhammad when asked to comment on the residents' allegations, said he would discuss more thoroughly on the construction of flood mitigation project with the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) first.

“We will hold a state NSC meeting this Thursday with several agencies that will be chaired by the menteri besar and will ask DID to present methods to overcome the problem,” he said.
