With a day left, question mark over Idrus Harun’s contract

There has been no confirmation from Idrus Harun on whether his tenure will be extended as his current two-year contract ends tomorrow.

PETALING JAYA: With just one day to go before his tenure ends, it is still uncertain whether Attorney-General (AG) Idrus Harun’s contract will be extended or if the government will announce a successor.

He has not responded to a text message sent by FMT to him earlier today.

Idrus, 67, a former Federal Court judge, was appointed to the position on a two-year contract on March 6, 2020, days after Muhyiddin Yassin took office as prime minister.

He replaced Tommy Thomas, who resigned on Feb 28, after then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamed tendered his resignation following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government.

The position of Solicitor-General is also left vacant following the mandatory retirement of Abdul Razak Musa last month.

Under the Federal Constitution, the King appoints the AG, who is also the public prosecutor, on the advice of the prime minister.

Idrus who once served as solicitor-general, had also served as legal adviser in the Election Commission and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. He is the brother of Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Harun. - FMT
