BN top leadership yet to discuss expediting GE15, says MIC chief

The pressure mounted by some Umno leaders on Putrajaya to expedite the next general election has never been discussed by BN's top leadership, MIC president SA Vigneswaran said.

Speaking to reporters, the leader said it is general knowledge that the federal government's memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Pakatan Harapan will end this July.

"(So far) BN has not discussed holding an early election, but everybody knows that the MOU will end in July.

"So, every individual has their own opinion on the country's political scenario after the MOU has ended," he said.

Vigneswaran spoke to the media after chairing the MIC Central Working Committee meeting at Menara Manickavasagam in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

During the recent Umno annual general assembly, the issue of calling for an early election had become one of the hottest topics of discussion.

However, certain quarters in Umno believed that there was no necessity for the prime minister to call for the dissolution of the parliament anytime soon.

They also reminded the government of its MOU with Harapan, where they agreed not to dissolve the Dewan Rakyat at least until the end of July this year.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is one of the party leaders seen to be very vocal in pushing for GE15, especially after Umno came out victorious in two state elections recently.

However, the call was objected to by Perikatan Nasional, which is Umno's partner in the federal government.

Several cabinet members from Umno, such as Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, had also voiced their objections to the pushing for GE15.

Meanwhile, Vigneswaran said there is a high possibility that GE15 will be held anytime soon after the MOU.

"In my opinion, whether it is to be held in August or October, everybody knows that GE15 has to be held before next year.

"So, the wise move is to prepare our party election machinery to face the election," he said.

The last time BN held its meeting was on Jan 28. - Mkini
