Cops probe negligence after detainee flees to see his wife

A man being held in a lock-up in Bayan Baru, Penang, escaped on Tuesday and was recaptured in Perak yesterday.

GEORGE TOWN: Six policemen are being investigated for negligence after a man escaped from the Bayan Baru police lock-up on Tuesday, police said. The man was recaptured in Batu Kurau, Perak yesterday.

Penang police chief Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said there were elements of negligence in the case and police were finalising the investigation paper involving six personnel with the rank of corporal and lance corporal, in their 20s and 30s, who were implicated in the case.

The escapee, Azizi Mohammad Hassan, 33, was arrested at about 6pm in a room at a chalet.

“We are trying to determine who helped bring him to the place. He was found with swellings and rashes on his body, believed to be due to skin allergies. He was immediately taken to hospital for treatment,” he told a press conference here today.

“Investigations showed that the man, being held for a drug offence, escaped from the lock-up without help from anyone. It is believed he fled to be with his wife who was due to deliver a baby,” he said. - FMT
