PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has offered himself for the party’s deputy presidency, pledging to support PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and fulfil his role as a “team player”.
He is the third person to declare his candidacy for the position after Rafizi Ramli and Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak.
Saifuddin and Rafizi previously ran for PKR's deputy presidency in 2014 and 2018 respectively. Azmin Ali succeeded in fending them off in both contests.
Saifuddin said party members should consider him as their deputy president because he has shown his loyalty for 23 years and was a key person in the party’s election preparations in 2008, 2013 and 2018.
“Our political landscape has changed a lot. No political party can dominate and win the general election. Therefore, diplomacy is a necessity.
“My experience in the party stretches back to Barisan Alternatif, Pakatan Rakyat and Pakatan Harapan.
“I hope that my skills will help our party in terms of political diplomacy in preserving ties with our allies in Harapan and other parties in this country,” he added.
The Kulim Bandar Baharu MP also pledged loyalty to the party in the event that he was unsuccessful in the PKR polls.
The PKR election will take place on May 13-18. Nominations will be on April 9.
PKR is the only party in the country which practises a one-person-one-vote system in electing the top-six party positions.
So far, two main factions divided between Saifuddin and Rafizi have formed with key ideological differences in relation to other parties.
While Saifuddin’s main campaign message is “diplomacy”, Rafizi has disagreed with calls by some Harapan leaders who are in favour of a “big tent” strategy. - Mkini
