King, Queen convey condolences to family of ex-Perak track guru

The royal couple expressed sadness over Suppiah Ramalingam’s passing.

PETALING JAYA: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, and the Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, have expressed their condolences to the family of former Perak track guru Suppiah Ramalingam, who died on Sunday.

In a statement posted on the Istana Negara Instagram page, the royal couple expressed sadness over Suppiah’s passing and said they hoped his family would be patient and remain strong during this time of grief.

“Their Majesties greatly appreciate the deceased’s devotion, service and sacrifice to the country and described his passing as a great loss to the country’s athletics,” the statement read.

Suppiah died at the age of 94 at a physio and care facility in Ipoh about two weeks after suffering a stroke.

While he served athletics selflessly, his life-long dedication to the sport had been overlooked.

In an interview in April, Suppiah told FMT: “What has the nation done for me in recognition of my services to athletics? Many people enjoyed my sporting journey with me but the nicest thing is when you are thanked and remembered.”

He had also lamented that he missed his friends in the athletics circle. - FMT
