Pandemic corruption: PAC requests Audit Dept probe, to summon ministries

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has filed a request for the National Audit Department to carry out an audit into the government's procurement and spending on medical services during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This is after the MACC claimed there were elements of corruption in medical procurement while the nation was grappling with the virus.

In a statement today, PAC chairperson Wong Kah Woh said an audit into this needed to be carried out swiftly so that the committee can further investigate the matter.

He added that the PAC will also be summoning the Finance Ministry, MACC, and other ministries and agencies involved to brief and explain matters to the committee.

The MACC is investigating bribery in the procurement of medical services and fraud related to medical protective equipment in terms of its quantity and quality.

They are also probing bribery of enforcement officers during the previous movement control orders and abuse of power in diverting relief aid and stimulus packages.

The heads of PKR and DAP are demanding swift action, and also transparency in the investigations. - Mkini
