Police extend remand for religious teacher suspected of sodomy

TANAH MERAH: Police have extended the remand on a religious school teacher suspected of sodomising his 13-year-old student since 2018, by another seven days.

Tanah Merah district police chief Superintendent Wan Zulfikri Wan Othman said the extended remand which would end on May 29, was obtained yesterday at the Tanah Merah court under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

"The extension is to enable the police to carry out further investigations into the case," he said

The suspect, in his 30s, was picked up by police at a religious school in Tanah Merah on May 16.

The local man was arrested several hours after the male victim lodged a police report at the Tanah Merah police station.

In his report, the victim claimed he had been sodomised by the suspect, who is also a hostel warden, frequently since 2018 with the latest incident taking place recently.

The victim had earlier revealed the matter to his family.

The suspect who has no previous record, has been teaching at the school for many years.

The case is being investigated under Section 377C of the Penal Code for committing carnal intercourse against the order of nature without consent. - NST
