PETALING JAYA: The National Recovery Council (MPN) has been rendered irrelevant now that the government has established a special committee to wage “jihad” on inflation, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
Zahid said MPN had failed and it was time for the government to dissolve the council, chaired by Muhyiddin Yassin, to “spare the ministers from attending unfruitful meetings”.
“The government must realise that with the setting up of the special committee to fight inflation, MPN is no longer effective, necessary, and aligned with Putrajaya’s latest efforts to help the people,” he said on Facebook.
He said think tanks like Khazanah Research Institute were already advising the government.
Zahid also said MPN was just a platform for Muhyiddin to improve his image and that of his party, Bersatu.
He said Muhyiddin was better off contributing his ideas through Perdana Leadership Foundation, along with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the establishment of a special five-member committee to wage “jihad” on inflation.
The committee, tasked with formulating strategies to tackle inflation and the rising prices of goods, will be chaired by communications and multimedia minister Annuar Musa.
The other members are finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, agriculture and food industries minister Ronald Kiandee, domestic trade and consumer affairs minister Alexander Nanta Linggi, economic affairs minister Mustapa Mohamed and Chief Secretary to the Government Zuki Ali.
MPN was formed in July 2021 to oversee the implementation of the national recovery plan, taking a “whole of nation” approach towards leading the country out of the pandemic in a safe and systematic manner. - FMT
