Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi claims to be in the dark about an alleged plot to oust him involving his deputy Mohamad Hasan, and his predecessor Najib Abdul Razak.
However, he stressed that as an elected party president, his foes should respect the party's constitution.
"I don't know about the meeting (to plot my ouster), I don't know.
"So, we must respect the party's constitution that is when someone is chosen by delegates, and a demand is made (to oust someone), there are party rules that allow or bar someone from sitting in that position," Zahid told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.
The alleged plot was revealed by Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, who has fallen out of favour with Zahid.
Tajuddin claimed that in May 2020, a group of senior and influential leaders in Umno gathered to broker a deal for Zahid to step down as party president.
He alleged that among the leaders present were Najib, Mohamad, and Umno vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
However, he said the plan failed after Mohamad and Najib bailed.
Tajuddin claimed that Mohamad, the former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar, was “intimidated” by Zahid into backing out from the plot.
Meanwhile, on whether Tajuddin would be facing disciplinary action, the Umno president said the party will follow due process. - Mkini
