PETALING JAYA: The severe congestion experienced at several LRT stations earlier today has been resolved and is under control, says Rapid KL.

In a statement, Rapid KL said the congestion was due to an “extraordinary” increase in the number of passengers because of the National Day celebrations.

It said rail service operator Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd had taken immediate measures to control the situation and ensure the safety of commuters, such as increasing the number of trains.

“We admit that there are some aspects that need to be improved,” it said. “We will reassess our systems and operational procedures so that a similar situation does not occur.”

Rapid KL said it would ensure ticket vending machines could accept cash and coins and it would also increase the number of staff and auxiliary police officers at its stations.

It added that it would assess the feasibility of providing alternative services, such as a non-stop bus service from one station to major interchange stations.

Earlier today, Rapid KL said that its trains on the Ampang-Sri Petaling line would not stop to drop and pick up passengers at Platform 1 of the Masjid Jamek LRT station. However, Platform 2 remained operational.

It said the service disruption was due to “security factors” as areas surrounding the station were swarmed with commuters. - FMT
