Monitor budget to ensure funds reach target groups, govt urged

Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah has called for accountability to ensure allocated funds reach the schools needing them.

PETALING JAYA: An MP has called for a system to monitor how well budget allocations are used.

Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah pointed to what she said was an instance of an allocation missing its targeted purpose.

Despite last year’s large budget for infrastructure in the education sector, she said, many schools had yet to receive the required funds.

“For example, in Petaling Jaya, we still have schools where the roofs are in bad shape. There are also schools that don’t have wifi and science laboratories without water supply,” the PKR MP told FMT.

She called for accountability to ensure that allocated funds reach the schools needing them.

The national budget for 2023 will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 7.

Maria said she would like to see a separate budget for the improvement of the education sector “so it becomes a national pride again”.

She suggested a close collaboration between industry leaders and the people responsible for restructuring the sector.

Small and medium enterprises could, for example, be funded to provide training opportunities, she said.

“How many times can the government provide food baskets? With urban poverty, it is now necessary to create business opportunities and more training opportunities,” she said.

Maria also urged the government to take advantage of the growth of the digital economy by channelling workers towards that sector.

Referring to PKR’s controversial and recently concluded elections, she said party members had mended bridges.

“All of us have moved on,” she said. “I’m glad the party’s elections have ended. We are now focusing on the general election.”

She said she saw increasing public support for PKR, citing the attendance at its recent ceramahs in Negeri Sembilan and Johor.

“This is a good sign. It is time to build upon the momentum and tell the public how we can bring change to the country.” - FMT
