Muafakat Nasional or Perikatan Nasional, PAS to decide next week

PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin said the party could either leave Perikatan Nasional (PN) and revive the Muafakat Nasional (MN) alliance with Umno or continue in PN.

PETALING JAYA: Questions over PAS’ allegiance are set to come to an end next week, according to the Islamic party’s spiritual leader Hashim Jasin.

Hashim said PAS could either leave Perikatan Nasional (PN) and revive the Muafakat Nasional (MN) alliance with Umno or continue in PN.

He said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had met his Bersatu and Umno counterparts, Muhyiddin Yassin and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, regarding MN and the matter was now being discussed internally among the Islamic party’s leadership.

“A decision will likely be made next week,” he told FMT, adding that PAS had attempted to unite Umno and Bersatu.

Hashim said the meeting also touched on cooperation among the three parties to ensure straight fights against Pakatan Harapan at the next general election (GE15).

“Each party will make its decision,” he said. “We will meet to decide whether to continue with MN or not but PAS hopes we (PAS, Umno and Bersatu) will unite.”

Yesterday, Muhyiddin said PAS would be sticking with PN in GE15, adding that the Islamic party was firmly committed to carrying on with the coalition.

The PN chairman also said there was no outcome or decision reached at a recent meeting between Hadi and Zahid. However, he said Hadi had hinted that PAS would make a final decision on cutting ties with Umno in the near future.

PAS and Umno formed the MN alliance in 2019 aimed at uniting the Malay-Muslim electorate. However, Umno later abandoned the alliance because of PAS’ support for Bersatu.

However, PAS has insisted the alliance remains alive and is adamant on working with both Umno and Bersatu at the coming general election, despite the two parties being at loggerheads. - FMT
