Umno behaving like an oligarchy on GE15, says MP

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim has disputed Umno’s interpretation of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s power to dissolve Parliament.

PETALING JAYA: An opposition MP has accused Umno leaders of acting like an oligarchy in making a decision last night to call for a snap general election before the end of the year.

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim of PKR said: “This Umno oligarchy does not care about the floods, does not care about the monsoon, does not care about the people’s hardships. They only care about trying to seize power.”

He alleged that Umno’s intention was to rush the elections before the High Court reached a decision, expected in December, in the trial of Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on corruption charges.

Hassan also disputed Umno’s interpretation of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s power to allow or withhold approval of a request to dissolve Parliament.

He said the King had discretionary power under the constitution on whether to allow a request to dissolve Parliament and Umno was wrong to say that the King must act on the prime minister’s advice on a dissolution.

He said the King’s discretionary power was “to ensure that the Malaysian Parliament is not dissolved at will by the ruling political party”.

He said the constitutional provision was a guarantee by the Federal Constitution “so that Malaysia does not fall into the hands of oligarchy like Umno’s top five”.

He contended that it would be an abuse of power were Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to kowtow to this Umno oligarchy.

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said last night that the party’s Supreme Council had agreed that Parliament should be dissolved in the near future to allow elections to be held this year.

Under the Federal Constitution, a general election must be held within 60 days of Parliament being dissolved. - FMT
