PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has denied asking the party’s candidates in the upcoming general election (GE15) to sign letters supporting him as the next prime minister if Barisan Nasional wins the Nov 19 polls.
“It’s a lie,” he told The Malay Mail when asked about such claims.
Quoting a party insider, The Vibes had reported yesterday that Zahid gave Umno’s candidates their surat watikah (appointment letter) to contest GE15 on the condition that they signed “a pledge of allegiance to the president”.
The source said this pledge was to give Zahid the mandate to form the government if BN wins GE15. Zahid is also the BN chairman.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob was previously named BN’s prime ministerial candidate should the coalition win GE15.
Zahid had stated on Oct 16 that the decision to nominate the Umno vice-president for the post was final. - FMT
