PETALING JAYA: The subsidy for the production of chicken eggs has been increased to 10 sen per egg effective immediately, says anti-inflation task force chairman Annuar Musa.
Annuar said the increase in subsidy would involve more than RM20 million in government spending to stabilise the supply of eggs in the country.
“The task force agreed to increase the subsidy for Grade A, B and C chicken eggs, and the finance ministry has also agreed to this decision,” he told reporters at a press conference.
Annuar said the average cost of producing an egg currently stood at 51 sen, while the ceiling price was 41 sen. After the subsidy was increased from three sen to eight sen per egg last month, there was still an additional cost of two sen for producers, he said.
This discouraged egg producers from producing sufficient Grade A, B and C chicken eggs, he added.
“They opted to slaughter chickens that had yet to reach maturity, so this resulted in a shortage of about 100,000 eggs per month,” he said.
Separately, Annuar, the communications and multimedia minister, said five out of six telecommunications companies had signed the reference agreement offer for the 5G rollout yesterday, allowing them to provide 5G services to their customers soon.
“The deadline to sign was yesterday, and the five companies are Celcom Axiata Bhd, Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, U Mobile Sdn Bhd, YTL Communications Sdn Bhd and Telekom Malaysia Bhd. Only Maxis did not sign,” he said.
In August, Maxis and U Mobile reportedly declined to take up the shareholder agreement after negotiations did not meet their requirements. - FMT
