Anwar issues letter to Baling MP demanding apology over ‘Israeli link’ claim

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is demanding a written confirmation from Baling MP Hassan Saad (right) that the latter did not make the allegation.

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has given Hassan Saad three days to clarify claims in an audio recording that the Perikatan Nasional MP had made allegations of “Israeli influence” in Anwar’s appointment as prime minister.

A woman in an audio recording claimed that the Baling MP told her that PAS had secured enough votes to form the government, but Anwar had “contacted Israel and foreign powers” to interfere in his appointment.

In a letter of demand issued today by law firm SN Nair & Partners to Hassan, Anwar said Hassan has three days to provide a general and written confirmation that he was not involved in the matter.

Anwar has also demanded that the audio recording, which has gone viral, be retracted.

According to the New Straits Times, Hassan has denied any involvement with the recording.

In the letter, Anwar claimed that he had been defamed in the audio recording uploaded by Twitter users “Mohd Ropi Mat Sin” and “Pemikir Malaysia”.

The Pakatan Harapan chairman said the Twitter post by “Pemikir Malaysia” received 431,500 views, 4,800 likes, 3,300 shares and more than 1,400 retweets.

Anwar claimed that the posting had also ridiculed the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, who consented to his appointment as prime minister.

He said it was also an insult to the Council of Malay Rulers.
