Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has clarified that the Louis Vuitton loafers he has been sporting of late were a gift from the Johor sultan.
In a tweet late last night, Anwar said he received the gift two years ago.
This was in response to a tweet by @NaratifRakyat that called out Anwar who refused to use the government’s Mercedes Benz S600 but was seen sporting a pair of LV Major Loafers that was said to cost RM5,500.
“It was a gift from His Majesty the Sultan of Johor two years ago. It is alright for you to question me, but don’t come up with a slanderous narrative,” wrote Anwar.
Anwar’s fashion choices have come under scrutiny of late after he clocked in for the first time at Putrajaya on Friday wearing baju melayu and a pair of chapal (traditional Malay slippers worn as formal attire) that was made in Kepala Batas, Penang.
Coupled with Anwar’s decision not to use the S600 - bought by the previous administration and reportedly costing RM1 million - this suggested that he was on an austerity drive.
Eagle-eyed internet users later pointed out that Anwar wore the LV loafers when he was sworn in as prime minister.
Anwar’s predecessor Ismail Sabri Yaakob was also often subjected to scrutiny by haute couture fashionistas over his penchant for Burberry shirts. - Mkini
