Bring it on, I’ve defeated prominent candidates before, says Ku Nan

PUTRAJAYA: Umno’s Tengku Adnan Mansor, who has been the sole MP for Putrajaya since the seat was first contested in 2004, says he is not deterred at having to face five strong contenders on Nov 19 as he has defeated big names in the past.

Tengku Adnan, who is going for his fifth term, said he had no qualms in facing them in the six-cornered fight, which is a first for the federal territory constituency.

“I have competed four times and won against big names, including a PKR deputy president and a PAS vice-president.

“I have no problems,” Bernama reported him as saying when speaking at the Precinct 16 food court here.

“I believe in a clean and fair fight,” added Tengku Adnan, who is also known as Ku Nan.

At the last general election in 2018, Tengku Adnan polled 12,148 votes while Samsu Adabi Mamat from Pakatan Harapan received 8,776 votes and Zainal Abidin Kidam received 3,634 votes.

The combined number of votes the losers got was 12,410, which is higher than what Tengku Adnan obtained.

In 2013, Tengku Adnan defeated then-PAS strongman Husam Musa. In 2008, he also won against PAS’ Noor Mohamad. In 2004, he defeated Abdul Rahman Othman from PKR.

This time, he will face Bersatu vice-president Radzi Jidin (PN-Bersatu), Dr Noraishah Mydin Abdul Aziz (PH-PKR), Berjasa deputy president Rosli Ramli (Pejuang), as well as two independents, namely Lim Fice Bee and Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi.

The former minister also expressed confidence that young voters in Putrajaya would back him to retain the seat again this time.

“I love the young people in Putrajaya, some of whom I have known since they were very young. They will support me because they know what I have accomplished here,” he said.

Asked about the campaign posturing of “one vote for BN is one vote for Zahid to become prime minister” played up by the opposition, Tengku Adnan said there was no issue regarding this as BN’s prime ministerial candidate had been confirmed to be Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

“For me, there is no issue whether there is one vote for Ismail or Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The important thing is that one vote in Putrajaya is for me,” he said.

Meanwhile, Radzi said PN’s efforts to wrest the Putrajaya parliamentary seat from BN had entered into the “fifth gear”.

“I am offering myself to the people of Putrajaya so that I can bring a new approach and strategy to make the federal administrative capital a greater city,” he said after officiating the Putrajaya Taekwondo Open Championships here. - FMT
