Delivery rider mum carries child while working, remains hopeful

A food delivery rider, after a photo of her carrying her child while working went viral, hoped her economic condition will improve after her story was published in national media.

Single mother Azimah Abdul Rahim, 37, said many Malaysians have contributed to her after her photo was published by Utusan Malaysia this week.

“I received many contributions from the public and some people have also sent goods like clothes, toys, and other necessities to our house," she told the news portal.

The Foodpanda rider, who was photographed while working in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur, said there is no one to take care of her daughter, who is blind, so she must bring her along everywhere.

The photo of her with her six-year-old, Nur Ainul Zahirah Rashidi, has gone viral, with some internet users sharing what they claimed are the mother’s bank account details and address.

The veracity of the banking details shared on social media platforms cannot be confirmed.

Among those who came to her aid was preacher Ebit Liew, who gifted her a Perodua Viva.

She said she intends to use the vehicle to work as an e-hailing driver.

Azimah told Utusan she also hopes her application for public housing is granted, so she can work from home as an online seller of frozen food while caring for her daughter.

She urges all single mothers and parents of disabled children to continue fighting to care for their children.

“Don’t give up. We may have children with special needs, or many children, or cannot make ends meet, but never give up.

“Accept the rezeki (sustenance) that Allah gives, and turn a deaf ear to what others might say. Don’t be down on yourself. You must live for your children,” she said.

Not the only case

In June, a delivery rider went viral after a social media user shared a photo of him at work, while carrying his young child in a front carrier, in Chan Sow Lin, Kuala Lumpur.

Similarly, the father of three was reportedly forced to bring his youngest child to work because the family has no other childcare option.

Social media user Kharirul Fazli, 42, said he was alarmed to see little feet dangling from a motorcycle waiting at a traffic light, and looked up to see a baby in a carrier, mStar reported.

The Grab delivery rider was holding the motorcycle handle with one hand while his other hand was shielding the child’s head from the afternoon sun, Khairul, who was also on a motorcycle, described.

When Khairul’s TikTok post went viral, preacher Liew reportedly gifted the Grab delivery rider a new motorcycle and promised to pay for the rider’s monthly childcare fees. - Mkini
