PETALING JAYA: The High Court here has discharged the law firm of Valen Oh & Partners from acting for Goh Gaik Ewe, one of several defendants in a suit brought by 1MDB and four of its subsidiaries to recover money allegedly misappropriated from the state-owned company.

Goh, who is the mother of fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, is being sued for the return of jewellery said to be worth US$1.695 million.

The discharge order, issued by Justice Hayatul Akmal Abdul Aziz during online proceedings today, was made pursuant to an application filed by the law firm last month, according to The Edge.

Oh Choong Ghee represented the law firm in the proceedings, while Siva Kumar Kanagasabai appeared for the 1MDB group.

In July, the court granted the same law firm a discharge from acting for Jho Low and his father, Larry Low Hock Peng.

The order was given after the High Court had imposed a Mareva injunction freezing assets belonging to the Low family said to be worth US$1.43 billion.

Two weeks ago, 1MDB and its subsidiaries, 1MDB Energy Holdings Ltd, 1MDB Energy Ltd, 1MDB Energy (Langat) Ltd and Global Diversified Investment Co Ltd, secured default judgments in the same suit against Larry and Jho Low, and Jho’s brother, Taek Szen.

Pursuant to those judgments, Jho Low is liable for US$2.8 billion to the 1MDB group.

Together with his father, he is also liable for US$983 million, while Taek Szen owes US$27.5 million. - FMT
