Kok’s letter to EC ‘premature, desperate’, says Jamal

Jamal Yunos was named as the candidate for the Sungai Besar parliamentary seat earlier this week.

PETALING JAYA: Umno’s Jamal Yunos has slammed Teresa Kok over her letter to the Election Commission (EC) objecting to his candidacy in the 15th general election, saying it was both premature and wrong.

Jamal, who was named as the candidate for the Sungai Besar parliamentary seat earlier this week, also said Kok’s move reeked of desperation.

He said no bankruptcy order was ever issued against him.

“As long as there is no bankruptcy order, I am eligible to contest in the coming election,” he said in a statement.

Earlier today, Kok said the Sungai Besar Umno chief had yet to settle the terms of a judgment in a suit she filed against him. She said this may lead to him being declared a bankrupt.

On July 26, the High Court ruled that Jamal was liable for defaming Kok in 2017 when he accused her of misappropriating Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor (Yawas) funds under the state government’s Skim Mesra Usia Emas initiative.

The court ordered him to pay Kok RM300,000 in damages and RM50,000 in costs.

Jamal said he was appealing the case and believed that his appeal had merit and would be granted.

He said case management was scheduled for Nov 30. - FMT
