Maszlee confident of higher voter turnout in Johor

 

Maszlee Malik faces a four-cornered fight in Simpang Renggam, where he seeks re-election.

SIMPANG RENGGAM: Former Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik expects the general election (GE15) to have a higher voter turnout than the state elections in March.

He said the increase in the number of new voters and the lack of travel restrictions would cause more voters to go to the polls.

Maszlee said it would be unfair to use the voter turnout for the Johor elections to gauge the attendance come Nov 19.

The voter turnout for the Johor elections in March stood at 55%. The then Johor menteri besar, Hasni Mohammad, was reported to have said that concerns over Covid-19 may have seen voters stay away.

However, the voter turnout would be higher this time, Maszlee said, as Malaysia is in a transition to an endemic phase of Covid-19, and borders had been reopened.

“I also feel people are yearning for a change in government. So voter turnout will definitely be higher,” he told FMT.

Maszlee had contested the Layang-Layang seat in the Johor state elections but lost to Barisan Nasional’s Abdul Mutalip Abd Rahim.

In GE15, he will seek re-election in Simpang Renggam, against Hasni (BN), Fazrul Kamat (Perikatan Nasional) and Kamal Kusmin (Pejuang). - FMT
