Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan has taken to social media to list four reasons why the Aku Janji (letter of undertaking) that allegedly asked GE15 candidates to back BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamid for premier is fake.
"Firstly, the letterhead on the fake letter is an Umno one, but this is a general election so it should be BN.
"Secondly, the spacing and use of capitals for mentions of Barisan Nasional in the letter are not consistent with previous official letters.
"Thirdly, even if such an unsavoury move was true, how on earth would anyone honestly write 'dismiss legal cases involving leaders'?” he said in a TikTok video.
"Finally, I myself as a candidate for Alor Gajah in this upcoming GE15, have signed letters to the effect that I will not party-hop, I will be loyal to the party and serve the people responsibly. At no point did I see any conditions that matched the ones you see in the fake viral letter," he added.
Yesterday, BN communications director Shamsul Anuar Nasarah dismissed as fake the letter of undertaking purportedly requiring Umno candidates to support Zahid as prime minister.
"It is confirmed that this Aku Janji document that is being spread and going viral is false and not true.
"No such undertaking has been made.
"This is clearly a malicious effort from irresponsible parties and it is a plan to discredit Umno/BN during this GE15 period," he said in a statement on the BN Comms official Facebook page.
Among the undertakings in the false document include pledges to support Zahid as premier, to cease all investigations into party leaders and support government formation with any other party.
BN opponents ‘afraid of own shadows’
The Umno president has blasted his party's enemies for spreading "slander and deception" as campaign material.
"BN is trying to tell the truth but they are persistent in spreading fake 'undertaking letters' which are supposed to be signed by Umno candidates.
"They think that BN will be like them after winning GE14 and so the government will continue to drop court cases involving their leaders.
"That is why we believe that BN opponents are afraid of their own shadows. Anxious because they are worried that what goes around comes around," Zahid said on Facebook.
The incumbent Bagan Datuk MP called for an end to such dirty politics.
"Stop this kind of cheating and deceitful politics. Today Malaysians are rational and easily understand the difference between truth and falsehood. It is not difficult for them to ‘detect’ the lie.
“This latest slander against BN is clear and strong evidence why the people need to reject them and make sure that they do not become the government again," Zahid added. - Mkini
