Selangor plans to allow batik to be worn in state assembly

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government plans to allow batik to be worn to the state legislative assembly sitting following the implementation at the Parliament level, says menteri besar Amirudin Shari.

He said the move was one of the efforts to promote Batik Selangor which features the “bunga tanjung” (Spanish cherry) motif in its designs.

Amirudin said batik would be worn by state assemblymen, executive council members, civil servants and others.

“However, the state legislative assembly has yet to change its rules (on the dress code). When we amend the dress code to allow batik, then we can wear it,” he told reporters after the launch of Batik Selangor for civil servants here today.

Amirudin said Batik Selangor would be introduced to the grassroots leaders including village heads in the future.

He believed that the “bunga tanjung” motif was neutral and not linked to any political party and as such, would enable everyone to wear it.

Meanwhile, state rural development and culture committee chairman Borhan Aman Shah said the “bunga tanjung” motif was chosen based on research carried out by the Selangor Malay Customs and Heritage Corporation. - FMT
