Umno purge will silence reformists in party, says KJ

Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said he still hopes to be prime minister one day.

PETALING JAYA: The purge being carried out by Umno will silence reformists in the party, warns Khairy Jamaluddin.

The former Umno Youth chief, who was recently sacked from the party, said reformists would be hesitant to speak up as they would fear the repercussions.

“If they are too vocal, they will end up like me,” he said in an interview with Astro Awani tonight.

Khairy, who was given the boot for breaching party discipline during the 15th general election, had openly criticised party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in the past.

The former Rembau MP, however, is hopeful that the members in the respective party wings would push for reforms.

“It will take more than five years for Umno to restore the confidence of the public in the party.”

Khairy went on to say that he was still an Umno man, adding that he did not jump ship but was “thrown out of the house”.

“I still love Umno, but for now, I do not have any choice. And while I am not sure where I’m going, I do hope the push to mend Umno will continue.”

Despite being left without a party, Khairy said he still harbours the ambition to be prime minister.

However, this aspiration would not be a factor in deciding his next move, including which political party to join.
