PKR's Women's Wing legal bureau has urged athletes who suffered abuse to come forward and seek help.
This comes following public outrage over a coach who slapped two female volleyball players during an under-14 tournament on Dec 16 last year.
In a statement today, PKR Women's Wing legal bureau said the assault was a criminal offence under Section 323 of the Penal Code which comes with a fine of RM2,000, a jail term of up to one year or both.
"Moreover, we view this as a form of exploitation of children," they said.
They also urged the police and other authorities to investigate the matter to ensure that the victims are given justice and serve as a lesson to other coaches.
"This investigation is important to ensure that such incidents do not recur and send a clear message that physical abuse must not be normalised, more so when it involves children that need support and protection.”
The incident was caught on video in the Malaysia Volleyball Association's recording of the match between Malacca and Johor.
The matter has caught the attention of Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek – both vowing independent probes on the matter. - Mkini
