Immigration busts couple running illegal manpower agency from home

A couple with the Datuk and Datin title was arrested during a Feb 16 immigration raid on their home in Shah Alam that also housed 13 Indonesian women believed to have been illegally placed as domestic helpers or live-out daily cleaners.

Immigration director-general Khairul Dzaimee Daud said the 66-year-old man and his 56-year-old wife were found to be running an illegal private manpower agency together with an Indonesian counterpart.

The 13 Indonesian women discovered in the raid were aged between 22 and 47 years old.

"Initial investigations found they came into the country as tourists using the social visit pass.

"They were later supplied as domestic helpers or cleaners. Each of them will be charged between RM3,500 and RM4,500 as a 'service fee' for their entry, to be deducted from their monthly salary," he said, adding that the operation was launched following a public tip-off.

Khairul said the couple was being investigated under Section 55E of the Immigration Act 1959/1963 for allowing an undocumented migrant to enter or live on premises where they have an interest as a supervisor or have control.

All the migrants were arrested for alleged offences under the Immigration Act and its regulations.

The cases will be referred to the Labour Department over illegal recruitment and placement of workers, he added. - Mkini
