Bukit Aman’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) estimated that RM365 million had been lost as a result of “love scams” from 2018 to February this year.
CCID acting deputy director (Investigations) Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said a study conducted by the department revealed that of the 7,286 cases recorded, 82.5 percent of victims were women while the remaining 1,228 cases were men.
He said as an effort to combat the spread of such fraud cases, CCID has implemented various commercial crime prevention activities through the Royal Malaysian Police Anti-Scam Campaign.
“To ensure that the message of commercial crime awareness can be disseminated to all walks of life, CCID has diversified prevention activities that are carried out including sembang santai (casual chat) programmes, talks, and exhibitions at schools, houses of worship, and universities.
“CCID today took another step towards implementing its anti-fraud campaign in collaboration with Syarikat Dream Fill Sdn Bhd to produce an anti-fraud film titled ‘Oppa’,” he said in his speech at the launch of the film at Cheras PDRM College today.
He said one of the goals of the film is to educate the public about the modus operandi of online fraud syndicates and to awaken the anti-fraud spirit in society.
The film, which will start shooting in April this year, will feature South Korean lead actor Jang Tae-Oh alongside a number of local actors.
