PETALING JAYA: Sulaiman Ali has urged the people of Melaka to give their incoming chief minister and the new state cabinet the same support they gave him when he led the state.

Sulaiman, who submitted his resignation as chief minister to Melaka governor Ali Rustam yesterday, also thanked the people for their support, views, proposals, and criticism throughout his two tenures in the post.

“Today is my last day leading the Melaka state government as the chief minister after having taken office on March 9, 2020.

“So, I call on the people of Melaka to support and cooperate with the new state leadership,” the Lendu assemblyman said in a Facebook post.

Sulaiman was first sworn in as Melaka chief minister in March 2020 after the Sheraton Move led to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) federal government and, consequently, the PH state government in Melaka as well.

He was reappointed to the post after Barisan Nasional (BN) stormed to a commanding victory in the Melaka state polls in November 2021.

Yesterday, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed that Melaka Umno chief Ab Rauf Yusoh will be the coalition’s candidate for the post, following Sulaiman’s resignation.

Rauf, who is also the state BN chief, had been repeatedly linked to the chief minister’s post since BN won the state polls, though both he and Sulaiman have consistently denied such speculation.

Zahid claimed that Sulaiman resigned due to health issues. - FMT
