Outgoing Malacca Chief Minister Sulaiman Md Ali says he is resigning from his post of his own volition.
“The pressure comes from my instinct, my heart,” he told reporters today, based on an audio recording of the exchange.
He was asked whether he was being pressured to step down from his post.
“I’m tired and giving the opportunity to someone else. That is all,” Sulaiman (above) added.
To another question, he said he is not planning to take up a role at the federal level, nor has he reached any deal with Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for him to step down.
“I just want to stay at my constituency and look after my constituency, go back to the way it was before. Back to my normal life,” said the Lendu assemblyperson.
When asked about Zahid attributing health reasons for his resignation, however, he quipped that he sometimes has fever, dizziness, and coughs as he is getting old.
“Since when we humans are always healthy?” he said.
Zahid confirmed Sulaiman’s resignation yesterday after days of speculation that a change of leadership in Malacca was imminent.
Earlier today, he also confirmed speculation that Tanjung Bidara assemblyperson Ab Rauf Yusoh has been nominated as Sulaiman’s replacement.
A new chief minister is expected to be sworn in at 3pm tomorrow. - Mkini
