Najib the author of his own misfortune

When the Federal Court dismissed Najib Razak’s second bid to review an earlier judgement finding him guilty, Justice Vernon Ong, one of the five judges hearing the application, said that Najib was the author of his misfortune. Indeed!

Najib failed again and many Malaysians believe that justice has been served. But sceptics also ask, will he attempt to clear his name again? His lawyer, Shafee Abdullah, has hinted that the dissenting judgement in the review application would allow for another avenue to quash the guilty verdict.

In the weeks leading up to the judgment, there had been allegations that Najib would be granted a retrial, but in the end, that fell through because of the majority decision by the Federal Court judges.

Najib returned to Kajang prison. Now, we await yet another attempt by Najib and his lawyers to set him free. It’s like watching a badly-made movie with no plot.

Many Malaysians are weary of Najib’s legal manoeuvres, and tired of the waste of time, money, and valuable resources and manpower, of the use of taxpayers’ money which could be better employed elsewhere.

Justice is there to serve both the rich and the poor, but only the wealthy can afford to fund a seemingly endless series of appeals.

The American and Kuwaiti governments have sentenced those with a hand in the 1MDB scandal. In other countries, tighter measures were placed on various financial institutions and some banks have had to close. In Malaysia, we keep returning to the court.

It was judicious of the Federal Court panel of judges to deny Najib’s review application. Had they not done so, the fallout could have tarnished the judiciary, and it would have precipitated the fall of the unity government led by Anwar Ibrahim at a time when we need more stability, instead of more uncertainty.
