YOURSAY | ‘What do you think all these naysayers can achieve from the outside?’
Muda objects to pardon for Najib, will not apologise
Kilimanjaro: This furore started with Khalid Samad kicking the ball.
A fine gentleman that he is, Amanah communications director Khalid Samad ought to be excused for his plain and direct talk against corruption and one that has been one of the main pillars of Pakatan Harapan.
Reaching a consensus even amongst enemies to defend a country or territory is not something new.
We have been brandishing our swords since the day the first news on the 1MDB saga emerged and yet we have been forced to dig deep into our conscience to "look the other way".
Opinions have been varied and these have pitched the two main partners of the unity government in the coalition into a head-on collision, and some have even threatened the imminent fall of the government.
Getting where we are today with this government was nearly impossible.
The day after the 15th general election, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang announced that they have the numbers to form the government.
I don't know how others felt but I felt like a dagger being driven through my chin and exiting from the back.
Yes, we can go on talking about principled politics but in reality, we left that arena quite some time ago.
Neither Khalid nor Muda should now bemoan what Umno is as if they were not aware of Umno's past when the pact was sealed to form the unity government.
Talking of principles, Muda's elected representatives should have resigned instead of wandering with a begging bowl.
These words may seem harsh, but it is nothing more than hypocritical. They wanted a bite at the stale cherry and they should not be complaining now.
The opposition is watching the unfolding drama and quite possibly may wish to see or even initiate cracks within the government.
Those within BN are waiting for their ministers' posts. Rumours in the grapevine had "deciphered" that even those from within Harapan have been stimulated to join the ranks of the opposition to form a government.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has a colossal task to keep this government together and work slowly towards reforms from within. I will continue to place my trust in him on this.
What do you think all these naysayers can achieve from the outside? If you ask me, frankly, let former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak go and help build up the unity government.
Najib is not going to be the prime minister and what I would want is our justice system to continue its sterling work.
Mosquitobrain: I disagree. Najib was never repentant despite being found guilty and slapped with a 12-year sentence for money laundering and abuse of power.
His snobbishness and arrogant attitude (untouchable mentality) do not deserve any sympathy at all, let alone a pardon from the Agong.
Setting Najib free will send a wrong message to the world and makes Malaysia a laughing stock.
SeniorCitizen: Well said and well done, Muda! Our country, our government and most importantly our people are being held to ransom by Umno. This cannot be allowed.
We read of poor people stealing a few ringgit worths of provisions and being jailed for their crimes.
Here we have an unapologetic convicted felon, who in addition to the billions siphoned off as heard during the trial, was also our finance minister and supposedly in charge of the peoples' coffers, is being considered for pardon?
Where is justice? Where is fairness? Pardon him only if everyone else convicted of lesser crimes is also pardoned.
BlueShark1548: DAP and Amanah are coalition partners of Umno in the unity government and, as such, should not attack each other if possible to avoid friction and misunderstandings.
We must remember that Umno members at its annual general meeting unanimously passed the proposal to submit an appeal to the Agong.
Umno has three million members and its leaders must act on the proposal which it did. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said said that everything is now up to the Agong. So, leave it at that!
The overall objective is to sustain and strengthen the unity government not to weaken it by an issue like Najib's pardon, which is now water under the bridge.
Najib submitted his pardon application to the Agong in 2022 and it is pending hearing by the Pardons Board.
Likewise, Umno had submitted its application of appeal to Agong. Just leave it to the Pardons Board and the Agong to decide.
Why must the unity government politicians seek political mileage from this issue and risk the collapse of the coalition government?
National interests should be on their minds, not publicity. Govern and cease politicking for publicity.
DAP has set a good example by remaining focused on discharging its responsibilities in government.
Muda is an insignificant party and not a member of the unity government and can make as much noise as possible to gain political mileage.
This is one reason why Muda should remain out of the coalition in the unity government.
My2cen: Indeed. This is why Muda should not join Harapan. It should remain as a Harapan-friendly party, maybe make an election pact, but stay out of the alliance.
They have a role to play to raise concerns about “sensitive” issues like this the Harapan parties are not able to raise to “protect” the “kerajaan campuran” (coalition government).
They should continue to work on the ground and influence and shape the thinking of the young.
Move on to the Malay-Islamic centric areas as well as engage with the urban young. In time, they will have a bigger support base.
Vote4changejohor: Muda’s stand on the pardon issue is in sync with the wishes of the citizens of Malaysia who follow the SRC trial of Najib as well as the 1MDB mega scandal and its aftermath.
It leads Malaysia into a period of darkness and loss of dignity and standing worldwide. Our country is still paying for the huge financial losses due to the scandal. - Mkini
