Mat Sabu: PAS has a history of changing its political fatwas

PAS members should not be afraid to vote for other parties as the Islamist party has a history of changing its political fatwas to suit its needs, said Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.

When he was a PAS deputy president, Mohamad (above) said, party members believed that it was a sin for them to vote for any party other than PAS.

However, he said, the party changed its positions several times and made friends with parties that PAS used to see as its enemy.

“...PAS became friends with Umno through Muafakat Nasional, and working with Umno was then regarded as a gift from Allah.

“(PAS said) DAP is communist, DAP is bad. But between 2008 and 2013, PAS had tahaluf siyasi (political cooperation) with DAP. So, DAP was considered good then, the PAS president had even campaigned for DAP in Teluk Intan.

“This means that political belief changes. So, to all PAS members who are listening through a live telecast, do not be afraid to vote for others in the future,” he said.

Mohamad, popularly known as Mat Sabu, was speaking at “Jelajah Mega Madani Negeri Selangor” in Shah Alam, Selangor last night, which kickstarts Pakatan Harapan’s campaign tour for the upcoming state election.

Besides the Amanah president, the programme also featured several other prominent Harapan leaders including DAP deputy chairperson Gobind Singh Deo, PKR vice-president and caretaker Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari, as well as PKR Youth chief Adam Adli Abdul Halim.

Mohamad also urged Selangor voters to use the state election to stop political parties that have been harping on racial and religious sentiments to create disunity.

He gave several examples, including a recent accusation that Harapan-controlled Penang has become like Israel.

“This is a very evil accusation. I want to ask, (if this were true), how many Malays and Muslims have been exterminated in Penang? Were there any?

“But these people with bad mouths always like to play up racial sentiment like this. So, to all those who are here today, let’s put this practice to a stop.” - Mkini
