Umno supreme council member Ahmad Shabery Cheek has been appointed as the new Felda chairperson, effective July 1.
Felda expressed optimism that Shabery’s (above) appointment will be able to continue the agency’s transformation efforts for the benefit of settlers and Felda’s new generation.
Shabery was previously the agriculture and agro-based industry minister under the BN government from 2015 to 2018.
Felda also conveyed its highest appreciation to Idris Jusoh, who announced that he is stepping down as chairperson at the end of the month, earlier than the scheduled date in May next year.
Idris also announced that the Prime Minister’s Office had decided that he would step down from his post to pave the way for a “more suitable successor”.
Idris, who was the higher education minister from 2015 to 2018 and former Besut MP, was appointed as Felda chairperson in May 2020.
"Throughout his three years of service, Idris had returned Felda to its glory days with various achievements obtained by this agency as well as Felda settlers.
“Among the biggest achievements is the increase in the productivity of the settlers’ farms, which increased by more than two tonnes per hectare per year, from 17.29 tonnes per hectare in 2021 to 19.43 tonnes per hectare in 2022.
“The increase in revenue also directly increased the income of the settlers,” Felda said in a statement today.
Other achievements
It also praised Idris for bringing a new paradigm that supported the settler community to give, rather than to receive.
“This can be proven by the establishment of Waqaf Felda which has collected almost RM30 million in funds, including from the settlers themselves,” it added.
Among Idris’ other projects included the introduction of the Felda Digital Maker hub initiative: Coding and Robotic, smart classrooms as well as upgrading the Felda Mara Junior Science College Premier programme as the Ulul Albab Programme.
“These initiatives provided opportunities for the new generation to obtain a quality education that can improve their social mobility.
“All Felda settlers express their highest appreciation to Idris for his contributions and welcome Shabery as the new chairperson,” it said. - Mkini
