Juwairiya willing to risk 'excellent track record' to go against Azmin

STATE POLLS | Incumbent Bukit Melawati assemblyperson Juwairiya Zulkifli is willing to risk her "excellent track record" in the constituency to go up against her former boss Azmin Ali in Hulu Kelang.

Having her seat changed on the eleventh hour due to a swap with Amanah, Juwairiya believes there must be a solid reason for Pakatan Harapan/PKR leadership to field her there.

"I see this as a new challenge. My achievement so far has put the party leadership to field me in a more challenging seat.

"It is to prove that Harapan candidates can work. I'm not afraid, although people are saying that I'm contesting against my former boss," said Juwairiya when met at the nomination centre at SMK Sungai Pusu in Gombak this morning.

According to the PKR Women's deputy chief, she only found out about her seat change 24 hours before Harapan revealed its candidates.

In the Aug 12 polls, Azmin is contesting in Hulu Kelang instead of defending his Bukit Antarabangsa seat.

The former Selangor menteri besar denied accusations he is “running away” from Bukit Antarabangsa, which he first won in the landmark 2008 general election that marked the fall of Selangor to Harapan.

Met after nomination today, Azmin said he was not afraid of clashing with Juwairiya in the polls.

He stressed that the Hulu Kelang state seat was also not "alien" to him, as he had won it in the 1999 general election.

"Why was she (Juwairiya) changed from Bukit Melawati to Hulu Kelang? I'm not running away; I have won in Hulu Kelang before.

"Hulu Kelang is my hometown, my family is from here. I'm confident the people of Hulu Kelang will be with me based on the service rendered." - Mkini
