Muhyiddin endorsed Bersatu associate members’ sacking, says chief

Bersatu associate members’ wing chairperson Dr Chong Fat Full said the dismissal of several of its pro-tem leaders was endorsed by party president Muhyiddin Yassin.

He stated this when asked to comment on claims that the wing is in turmoil following the sacking of at least three pro-tem leaders.

The trio are the wing’s vice-president Mahaganapathy Dass, information chief S Subramaniam, and exco member MU Raja.

“Subramaniam and Mahaganapathy are not in the exco of (Bersatu’s) associate member’s wing. They have never received appointment letters from any party. The old appointment letters were terminated so that the new ones can be enforced without any confusion.

“The new appointment letters were signed by the Bersatu president himself on June 6, 2023.

“This means that the appointment of the new Bersatu associate wing exco members was made with the president’s recognition,” he told Malaysiakini.

However, Chong did not explain MU Raja’s dismissal.

The Bersatu associate members’ wing was established in 2021 for non-bumiputera members to join the party.

Initially, the wing was led by former Segamat MP Edmund Santhara Kumar. Fourteen members were given appointment letters by Muhyiddin.

However, Chong, who was the deputy chairperson at the time, replaced Santhara in August of last year.

Under Chong’s leadership, Mahaganapathy was appointed as the new deputy chairperson, while Subramaniam was appointed as the information chief.

Two letters, two different answers

When contacted, Subramaniam said that Chong’s statement was inaccurate and confusing.

“According to him, the Bersatu president signed the new appointment letters on June 6. However, I have evidence that Muhyiddin was not aware of the dismissal issue until June 10.

“On the morning of June 10, Muhyiddin himself replied to my text message saying that he was not aware of the dismissals in the associate members’ wing.

“So, how can the president recognise the new appointments on June 6, but on June 10, he himself said he was not aware of the dismissals,” he said.

He added that he still has the text message from Muhyiddin as proof.

“Secondly, Chong said the new appointments were made on June 6. But the dismissals were issued on June 16. How is this possible?

“Usually, you dismiss the existing office bearers and then appoint the new ones. But Chong appointed the new members first. After 10 days, he dismissed the old ones. This is very confusing,” he claimed.

He said that a letter dated June 16, signed by assistant secretary Richard Ng, stated: “A new pro tem committee is currently being appointed”.

“Chong said the president signed the new appointment letters on June 6. The letter says, ‘A new pro tem committee is currently being appointed’.

“Which one is correct?” asked Subramaniam. - Mkini
