N Sembilan polls: Rais Yatim's son to face off cousin in Klawang

As the state polls loom, Bersatu executive council member Danni Rais has found himself competing against his own cousin, Amanah’s Bakri Sawir, for the Klawang seat in the upcoming state elections.

According to Malay daily Sinar Harian, Danni (above) assured a healthy competition against the incumbent, noting that political differences among family members are normal.

"We will compete in a healthy manner, without attacking each other personally...

“I will showcase what I can offer," he told Sinar Harian after the announcement of Perikatan Nasional’s Negeri Sembilan candidates yesterday.

In the 14th general elections, Bakri, a first-time contestant, emerged victorious with 4,296 votes, defeating his opponent, BN’s Baharuddin Jali, who secured 3,320 votes.

No influence

Bakri is the nephew of former Jelebu MP and Dewan Negara president Rais Yatim, who is also Danni’s father.

Meanwhile, Danni also said that his father’s linkage to his party had no influence on his candidacy.

The Negeri Sembilan Bersatu Youth leader added that if that were the case, his name would have been put forth as a candidate a long time ago.

"Everyone will say that whatever I have achieved in life is because of my father, and I can’t deny that.

“There are many other examples (of family affairs in politics), such as Mukhriz Mahathir, Lim Guan Eng, and also the family members of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

"But I will do my best with the opportunity given. I am just fortunate to have a father like Rais," he added. - Mkini
