PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has dodged a question about whether Sabah MP and assemblyman Shahelmey Yahya has been suspended from the party.

He told reporters that all issues related to Shahelmey’s alleged six-year suspension would be resolved internally, Bernama reported.

As far as Umno is concerned, Shahelmey represented the unity government as MP for Putatan and state assemblyman for Tanjung Keramat, Zahid said.

“In the unity government, we are governed by a spirit of unity and therefore, all issues will be discussed and resolved internally,” he was quoted as saying.

Last week, Shahelmey said he had not received an official letter from Umno about his six-year suspension, which was announced in March by Bung Moktar Radin, the head of Sabah Barisan Nasional and Sabah Umno.

The announcement came two months after Shahelmey defied a decision by Sabah BN to withdraw support for Hajiji Noor as chief minister.

Shahelmey and four other assemblymen pledged their support for Hajiji, ensuring that Hajiji’s Gabungan Rakyat Sabah government remained in power.

Hajiji then formed a unity government in alliance with Pakatan Harapan and BN, with Shahelmey being appointed as one of three deputy chief ministers, replacing Bung Moktar, who was dropped from the Cabinet.

Shahelmey also took over the works ministry portfolio, which was previously handled by Bung Moktar. - FMT
