Malaysia’s never-ending Merdeka agenda

Very soon, we Malaysians will be celebrating the 66th anniversary of the Independence of Malaya from our former colonial masters.

That was before Malaysia was officially formed in September 1963.

As an independent nation, Malaysia needed to chart its way forward to bring about development in various spheres, mainly socio-economic development.

We were on an upward trajectory in such development until progress was stymied and negated by problems created by corruption and kleptocracy, which exacerbated issues stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nevertheless, the nation’s agenda for socio-economic development is an ongoing process.

Our Merdeka agenda is a never-ending one as it is being continuously influenced by regional and international developments.

As such, it is very worrying when some Malaysians today seem to be holding the nation back.

The issues we face

First, the political bickering that diverts attention to things other than good governance. That causes political instability and distracts leaders from focusing on the Merdeka agenda, which demands revisions of domestic policies in a regional and global environment.

Then, there are the divergences from good and honest governance, with abuse of authority overshadowing any good done.

Today, some Malaysians also seem to have their minds “colonised” by those using fear and the manipulation of religion.

All told, our Merdeka agenda is now facing real issues that are created by some Malaysians. These wounds are self-inflicted.

In the spirit of Merdeka, it is hoped that the rest of us - who put our beloved nation first - will help the government ensure that Malaysia will be on an upward trajectory in socio-economic development as the nation enters its 67th year of independence.

Let us unite and help Malaysia to a new wave of unfettered development and progress, and reject any attempt to derail it.

It will be a wave that shows the spirit of Malaysia, and Malaysians boleh. - Mkini
