Anwar's special officer lodges police report over temple procession claim

A special officer to Tambun MP Anwar Ibrahim has lodged a police report against an NGO for accusing him of obstructing police from carrying out their duties.

R Suresh Kumar alleged that charity organisation Yaqin Bersaudara Ipoh Perak had wrongly accused him of intervening in police work over a temple procession in Klebang, Tambun during Ramadan back in April.

Suresh (above) filed the police report on Aug 23 at the Ipoh district police headquarters in Perak.

"I am disappointed with the NGO for making a false police report against me without seeking clarification from me first.

"In the report, they claimed I threatened a police officer and showed a lack of respect for Malay and Islamic sensitivities by requesting for a procession in a predominantly Malay area during Ramadan.

"I vehemently deny their (police) report and urge the police to investigate the NGO," he told Malaysiakini.

Suresh claimed that the NGO filed the report in an attempt to tarnish the reputation of the prime minister, who is also Tambun MP, and the Madani government.

On Aug 18, Yaqin Bersaudara Ipoh Perak filed the police report against Suresh.

At the time its chairperson Mohd Amir Ikram Kamaruddin clarified that the report was based on a viral video that depicted an individual purportedly intervening in police operations related to the aforementioned temple procession.

Amir claimed that the police had rejected the temple procession's application to use Klebang’s main road and suggested an alternative route to be more mindful of Malay sensitivities and to avoid traffic congestion.

According to the NGO's police report, the individual contacted the Perak police deputy chief "to pressure and force him" into granting permission to use the main road for the procession.

The group alleged that the police ultimately caved in after Suresh identified himself as the "prime minister's right-hand man".

The NGO's report further alleged that during the procession, a brawl ensued and caused traffic congestion.

It stated that the Malay residents were left disheartened, as they perceived the Tambun MP's office to have disregarded Malay and Islamic sensitivities. - Mkini
